Windhill | Bernal Heights, San Francisco

Windhill is the family home of architect Kevin Short and designer Katie Heller, perched in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights. What began as a modest house in disrepair became a five-year, hands-on rebuild that blurred the line between design and daily life.

Undertaken largely by the couple themselves, the project took shape piece by piece through the steady work of their own hands. The gardens grew in tandem with the house, designed and built by the owners to be inseparable from the architecture.

Together, house and landscape form an urban retreat — one that reflects not only a design vision, but also the lived process of building a family home.
